How to Run an Effective Board Meeting: Basic Rules of Procedures for Municipal Officials

Morning Session | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.


Official actions taken by cities and towns can only occur during properly called and advertised board meetings. Since many items come before the municipal board for action, official sessions of the board must be run effectively and efficiently. This course provides an overview of the basic principles, 角色, 来源, and common problem areas for running effective municipal board meetings.

This course aims for municipal officials (elected and appointed leaders) to apply knowledge gained to run effective and efficient municipal board meetings. Specifically, learners will:
  • Recognize the seven fundamental principles that govern board meetings.
  • Explain the 角色 of the presiding officer (Mayor) and Council in the conduct of board meetings.
  • Summarize the statutes and local rules that apply to board meetings.
  • Identify common problem areas that impact or delay board meetings.
  • Implement concepts and best practices at board meetings.

Municipal Supervisory Basics

Afternoon Session | 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.


As employees excel in their field and ultimately get promoted into supervisory positions, their role changes. These new supervisors are now no longer just experts in their field. They are managers, faced with new set of challenges requiring a new set of skills. 

This transition is often overlooked or ignored, despite the importance of the role. To manage well is among the most critical goals within any workplace, as it has an impact on employee morale, 生产力, creativity and overall teamwork. But, what makes a good manager?

This course answers that question and provides learners with basic skills and knowledge for effective supervision. The training includes topics of leadership, 沟通, 代表团, conflict resolution, 和团队合作. For new supervisors, this training will acclimate you to the role, define the key traits of a good leader, and provide best practices for you to use moving forward. And for experienced supervisors, this couse will serve as a valuable refresher on how best to manage your team.
